Frischer Pop aus L.A. - am 24. April erschien Adaline's neue EP "Dear Illusion,".

Als erfolgreiche und produktive Komponistin für Film und Fernsehen ist die in Los Angeles lebende Kanadierin in über 80 Szenen zu hören, darunter "Grey's Anatomy", “90210” und vielen anderen Serien und Filmen. Ihre neue EP “Dear Illusion," wurde größtenteils von dem renommierten deutschen Produzenten Maximilian Jaeger (Diplo, Big Sean) produziert. Es ist eine Art Coming-Out Platte - sie wurde geschrieben, als die Sängerin sich zum ersten Mal in eine Frau verliebte. “Dear Illusion,” steht für eine sehr persönliche Reise, auf der sie ihre wahre Identität und Queerness akzeptiert. "Ich habe einen Teil von mir selbst unter Verschluss gehalten, und die Geheimhaltung hat sich auf mein emotionales Wohlbefinden, meine Beziehungen und meine Musik ausgewirkt. Ich hatte das Gefühl, nicht mit der Transparenz und Verletzlichkeit zu schreiben, an die ich gewöhnt war. Ich wusste, dass das Schreiben dieser Platte zu einigen schwierigen Gesprächen mit wichtigen Menschen in meinem Leben führen würde, aber ich musste ehrlich sein", erzählt Adaline.
Aufgewachsen als Tochter eines evangelikalen Pfarrers, erlebte Adaline viel Trauma und Angst, ihre eigene Sexualität zu akzeptieren. Das führte sie schließlich zu einer tiefgreifenden Erforschung und Untersuchung der Sexualität und der Kirche - wobei sie die traditionelle Auslegungen der Heiligen Schrift in Frage stellte und auf die Verzweiflung und die hohe Selbstmordrate von Homosexuellen innerhalb religiöser Gemeinschaften aufmerksam machte.
“Dear Illusion,” ist die vierte Veröffentlichung der fesselnden Songwriterin. Inspiriert von der Landschaft Kaliforniens und seiner Abgeschiedenheit, kehrt die EP merklich vom stimmungsvollen Sound ab, den man normalerweise von Adaline erwarten würde. Luftige Pop-Hooks sind durchdrungen von Geschichten über Desillusionierung, Sucht und eine Reise in eine aufschlussreiche Liebe. Düsterere Themen erforschen den Schub und Sog der Illusionen, die wir erzeugen, gepaart mit einer klanglichen Leichtigkeit, die ätherisch und hell ist.

As the mood of the title suggests, this song is the perfect fit to start off a sad playlist. I first heard this song right after my boyfriend left me stranded on a ski trip in Whistler. I had to take the bus home and this album accompanied my heartbroken journey. A couple of my favourite all time lyrics are in this song too. One lyric that seems to become more relevant as I age is "You see I've been to hell and back so many times I must admit you kinda bore me". Yup, miserable.
Susanna and the Magical Orchestra - Love Will Tear Us Apart
I first heard this cover when I was heartbroken over my first love...ok a theme is emerging. It brings back such a nostalgic feeling and a sadness that is palpable even 15 years later. I love the simplicity and how the cover really brings to light how immensely sad these lyrics are. Plus, it's so beautiful.
Radiohead - Nude
This band has made me miserable in such a perfect way through out my life. The opening line of this song is "Don't get any big ideas. They're not gonna happen" - dark right? Perfect. Set against a backdrop of gorgeous strings and other beautiful ambient soundscapes this is one of my all time fav songs from my all time fav band.
Chopin - Nocturne No. 1 In B Flat Minor, Op. 9 No. 1
I studied classical piano up until University and this is the only song I can still play (barely). Of all the songs I learned this one stayed with me in a meaningful way and whenever I get the chance to sit in front of a real piano I try to access the muscle memory that once came so easily from hours of playing it.
Jeff Buckley - Lover You Should Have Come Over
To get back on the subject of lost loves, one of my first partners introduced me to Jeff Buckley and he was the first songwriter I felt an instant deep connection to. Such a poetic and emotive voice that makes me well up with emotion. I still get weepy listening to this song. It also has one of my favourite lyrics "A Kingdom for a kiss upon your shoulder". The sadness and tragedy of his death also adds an extra weight to these songs for me.
Jónsi - Tornado
Lead singer of one the most influential bands in my life "Sigur Rós", this song always hits me in the gut. Like many of his songs, it isn't necessarily sad sounding, more emotionally charged in a beautiful way sonically, but it makes me cry which tricks me into thinking I'm sad. And because I can never fully tell what he's saying I get to make up my own meanings behind the lyrics, which are usually (you guessed it) sad.
Daughter - Smother
The ending line of this song is "I sometimes wish I stayed inside my mother, never to come out"... just a little heavy? yeah. Which means it automatically makes this list.
Nick Drake - River Man
Another brilliant artist taken too young, no one elicits a feeling of melancholy for me quite like Nick Drake. It's a combination of beauty and sadness which is my favourite mix. The string arrangement in this song is absolutely stunning. I recommend listening to this song with a glass of red wine by a fire, while crying of course.
Cinematic Orchestra - To Build A Home
I always told myself when I was young if I got married I would walk down the aisle to this song, so the fact that I'm still single makes this song miserable. Enjoy.
Damien Rice - Accidental Babies
Arguably the King of sad sad emo songs this tune is a lament to a lost lover wondering if they are truly happy with their new partner, hoping the answer is no. So...basically the story of my life.
