Hannah Cohen betitelt ihr nunmehr drittes Album „Welcome Home“. Ein doch recht merkwürdiger Name, wenn man weiß, dass alle Songs 2017 entstanden, während sie noch in New York City wohnte und eigentlich genug von dieser Stadt hatte. Vielleicht war Welcome Home ein Blick in die Zukunft, für die Künstlerin, die mittlerweile im ruhigeren Woodstock, NY lebt.
Produziert zusammen mit ihrem Partner Sam Owens, der unter dem Namen Sam Evian Musik macht, sprechen die Songs auf der Platte von Cohens Unruhe, Unwohlsein in der Stadt und ihrem Drang nach einer neuen Heimat. What about this city do you still love? // 'Cause it’s making me crazy // I can't get a new job // Gotta make it work // Or we can move to the country.
Immer im Vordergrund steht ihre Stimme, die mühelos über mehrere Register hinweg singt. Musikalisch bewegen sich die Songs zwischen Dream-Pop, klassischen Singer-Songwriter Stücken und hier und da auch elektronischeren Ausflüchten. Auffällig ist, dass alles, gewollt oder auch nicht, in einen coolen 60er Jahre Charme und Vibe verpackt wurde.
„Ich habe nicht das Gefühl, etwas vertuschen zu müssen“, sagt Cohen. „Es gibt auf der Platte weniger Interpretationsspielraum. Ich bin viel sichtbarer. Und ich denke nicht mehr über die Dinge nach, die in meiner Vergangenheit schiefgelaufen sind. Das habe ich hinter mir gelassen. Denn das war es alles wert, um da anzukommen, wo ich jetzt bin.“

Neil Young - Motion Pictures
I listened to “Motion Picture” probably for 7 hours straight on a drive recently. I felt a closeness to the song lyrically as I had just moved out of New York City and moved to the mountains. I’m working on a cover of this song soon.

Peggy Leeis one of my favorite vocalists. She also had a wild life and a very long career (spanning six decades ) I like to watch interviews of her, she had a lot of spice and I appreciate that. She did it all, singer, songwriter, composer, and actress.
Duke Ellington - In a Sentimental Mood
A beautiful collaboration between Duke Ellington and John Coltrane. The record is so special and I listen to it a lot at home whenever I’m feeling a bit of anxiety. It always makes me feel better.

I cried when I first heard this song. I had a lot of white wine and I cried.
George Harrison - I Live For You
This song also makes me cry. The pedal steel is so dreamy. I love it so much.

This song takes me to another world. The production is so dramatic and heavenly.

I’ve seen Sam play this song live and people in the audience cry, everyone cries to this song. It’s so heavy and Sam’s slide guitar playing is so emotive.
