Vier Jahre nach seinem gefeierten zweiten Album "Aforger" kehrt der Brite Douglas Dare mit seinem dritten Album "Milkteeth" - (erschien am 21. Februar 2020 auf Erased Tapes) zurück ins Rampenlicht.
Nach seinem Debüt Whelm im Jahr 2014 bewies Dare 2016 mit dem wesentlich düstereren Aforger erneut, dass er sein musikalisches Handwerk versteht. Seitdem ging es weiter bergauf: 2017 wurde er eingeladen, mit einer Reinterpretation von Dance Me to the End of Love zur Leonard Cohen Ausstellung A Crack in Everything am Contemporary Art Museum of Montréal mitzuwirken, die gegenwärtig am Jewish Museum in New York und ab September 2020 am Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco gezeigt wird. 2018 folgte er einer Einladung von Robert Smith mit einem Auftritt bei dessen Meltdown Festival im Southbank Centre, London, und im Jahr darauf trat er gemeinsam mit Anna Calvi beim von David Lynch kuratierten Manchester International Festival auf.
Douglas Dare wuchs als jüngstes Mitglied einer Großfamilie auf einer Farm auf, wo er oft in seiner eigenen privaten Welt zu finden war und im rosa Ballettkleid seiner Mutter tanzte.
“Only now do I feel free to express my inner child again, and am giving myself permission to play dress up,”
sagt Dare über das Titelbild seines aktuellen Albums, auf dem er weiches Make-up trägt und mit Schichten aus weißem Leinen drapiert ist und die Rolle einer griechischen Muse spielt.
“I never felt like I fit in. I was different, odd. I wanted to dance and sing and dress up and on a small farm in rural Dorset that really stuck out.”
Eigentlich als Klavierspieler bekannt, nahm Douglas für Milkteeth ein neues Instrument in die Hand - die Autoharp. Als er sich damit auseinandersetzte, strömten die Songs aus ihm heraus - er schrieb die erste Single des Albums, Silly Games, in weniger als einer Stunde.
“Instinctual feelings about childhood and innocence were the catalyst,” he explains. “Then with the autoharp, it all just clicked – I could see the album laid out ahead of me.”
Dare’s Musik erzählt von seinen eigenen Erfahrungen mit universellen Themen wie Liebe, Verlust und Kindheit. Vor allem aber schafft sie einen Zufluchtsort für alle, die sich verloren glauben und gibt all jenen unter uns, die sich anders oder fehl am Platz fühlen, eine Stimme. Ob er wie auf Whelm vom Schmerz derer in den irischen Magdalene Laundries singt, auf Aforger sein Coming-Out gegenüber seinen Eltern beschreibt oder wie auf Milkteeth die Isolation seiner eigenen Kindheit verarbeitet, Dare tut dies alles mit einer ihm spezifischen Offenheit und Aufrichtigkeit und einer klaren Vision seines simplen aber unverwechselbaren Sounds.

This track encapsulates everything I love about classical music and electronic music in one; there is a beautiful simplicity and pace, with gorgeous melodies and flourishes.

This is a magical piece of music which immediately soothes me. I'm not sure what Hania is singing and usually I care very much about the lyrics but this just cradles me and allows me to enjoy the moment.

I only recently discovered Cindy, another great dreamy song that helps me escape the panic of the day.

What a voice, I'm most used to hearing male voices in the style of music and so I enjoy the almost 'old lady' kinda voice here.

An arresting choral piece where the choir act like they are an orchestra. So stunning!
Cleo Laine - Hit the Road to Dreamland
Cleo is one of my favourite jazz vocalists, her voice is an instrument and here she sings effortlessly.
Pitou - Be Delicate
This minimalist song is hypnotic and meditative, I just wish it went on for 30 mins longer.

I'm a big fan of chords and one note changes to evolve the music, this does this throughout in a gorgeous subtle way.

Martha Skye Murphy - I'm Not Looking
Martha will support me at my London show, I obviously love some dark piano and melancholic melodies so she's right up my street.
