69 – Sophia

Eigentlich hätte „Holding On / Letting Go“ schon im April erscheinen sollen.

Hi Martin,

Thank you for asking me to do this. When I was told you wanted a Top 10 of my favourite sad songs I thought “Oh that will be easy” but you know what? It wasn’t at all. Not at all. Maybe it’s because a song that most feel is uplifting and positive can just as easily remind me of a time of so much unhappiness and therefore have the completely opposite effect? Or maybe it’s because a song that most would consider incredibly sad somehow seems to help lighten up my life? But having said all that there is a definite sense of melancholia to all of my favourite music and as such I thought I would rather give you a list of my favourite songs that I consider "thoughtfully melancholic". I hope that’s OK?

And I know you asked for two or three sentences but to be honest all of these songs generate so many different emotions in me (I was really quite surprised at the feelings that some of these songs brought flooding back…) that I found it quite impossible to summaries them so succinctly.

Music is a way for me to relate to moments in my life, whether this is music that I write or music that I listen to, and just as in every interview I’ve ever done regarding my own music, I was finding it nearly impossible to render these moments into just a few lines. (Maybe this is why I find songwriting so difficult as well?)

I did sincerely try to write these few lines for you but from the moment I started with ‘Sad Eyes’ and as everything (the memories of then and of now and of all the life in between…) began to resurface I’ll admit I was rather overwhelmed. Then I thought “OK. Let’s skip that for now. Why don’t I try ‘Are You The One’?” and again the same thing. And on and on and on. So much of my life in these songs.

You take care in these crazy times and stay safe, OK?

 Sincerely,

Robin
